Tues, 9/10: Applied KM in the Federal Government

At 5:30 on Tuesday, September 10, Dave Simmons will help KM Chicago kick-off a new season of programs. He'll be speaking about his focus on applied knowledge management in his work in the General Services Administration.

Applied Knowledge Management is an approach to organizing information so that users can find information they need that is trusted, up-to-date, and relevant to their needs. Dave will lead us through the process that his team developed to achieve this end and describe some of the lessons learned from that experience. 

Dave Simmons is a Knowledge Management Specialist for the U.S. General Services Administration. He has worked in both the private and public sectors in knowledge management, software design and development, library administration, and business process management for 25 years.

Anyone involved with knowledge management or with a strong interest is welcome to attend and participate in KM Chicago meetings. During fall 2013, meetings will be held in downtown Chicago at 11 East Madison. Call in participants are also welcome. Details are in the right-hand columm.

Knowledge Transfer: Retaining Expertise When the Experts Leave

Registration is now open for the joint SLA Illinois and KM Chicago workshop with Kathy Hagen on facilitating knowledge transfer in various workplace situations. 

Does it often seem that the only constant is change in your workplace? How can you capture the hard won critical knowledge, information, expertise, insights and wisdom before it is lost to staff retirements or reorganization? 

This class will help you build awareness of and develop practical skills to identify, assess and transfer business critical knowledge. We will also review how to scope a potential knowledge transfer project, including contracting and setting expectations.

KM Chicago Summer Outing 2013

Please join us for KM Chicago's annual summer outing July 9th, 2013. We have planned an evening on the river, with an architectural boat tour, followed by dinner at Howells and Hood, which is within walking distance from the Wendella Dock.  

We will meet at 5:30pm at Wendella Dock (on the north side of the river at the base of the Wrigley Building) and they begin boarding at 5:45pm. The boat departs at 6pm. Lean Six Sigma & Innovation

Please join KM Chicago on Tuesday, May 14th at 5:30pm in the Loop for a conversation about Lean Six Sigma, Innovation and Knowledge Management. 

Praveen Gupta, President of Accelper Consulting, and Director of IIT Center for Innovation Science and Applications will lead the discussion on Six Sigma implementations. 

Most Lean implementations have been used to reduce waste in operations. Deploying Lean has led to cost savings, and excess capacity in equipment and human resources. Leadership and stakeholders expect financial returns.  Utilizing Lean aggressively for reducing waste has also resulted in ignorance of the need for business growth requiring innovation. Hence Lean without innovation would result in profit in a shrinking business. This scenario does not appear a viable solution for businesses in the long.

Operational performance accounts for about 10% of the corporate performance. In order to maximize benefits of Lean Six Sigma, corporations must focus on business development by introducing new products or services.

Lean Innovation is a framework that improves efficiency and effectiveness of the innovation process based on best practices of great innovators. Lean Innovation framework reduces waste in the innovation process for accelerating innovation and increasing return on investment in innovation. This way additional capacity is utilized for realizing business growth instead of downsizing businesses.

During the Lean Innovation presentation attendees will learn about Lean Six Sigma Scorecard, new rules of creativity and a new ideation process in for effective Lean Six Sigma deployment. Also, using knowledge management to sustain innovation and business performance.
