Presentation Summary
In the most important ways, technology in the enterprise focuses on internal concerns. Enterprise systems are designed to drive internal processes and support internal decision-making. But today's businesses are just as concerned with the much greater challenge of communicating effectively with customers, sales channels, executives, and others who drive internal processes. The scope of the shared information environment now includes participants from the entire value chain. In terms of both organization and content, the classic enterprise data model is not up to the challenge.
This presentation will explain why externally-focused metadata is an essential element of a truly robust enterprise data model. It will show how a metadata repository that provides a consistent, reusable model of the external perspective can serve as a fundamental resource for enterprise applications of all kinds. It will describe the challenges involved in designing and capturing the necessary metadata. Finally, it will review the potential for return on investment from metadata efforts and discuss strategies for maximizing that return.
