Biography

Robert Burns

Director | Knowledge Management of Group Benefits Operations at MetLife

Robert Burns enjoys over 20 years of creating and building strategic Knowledge Management (KM) platforms that enable the business to achieve its goals. Additionally, Robert has leveraged past experience with education, technology consulting, business training, and on-the-job KM experience to approach KM holistically and integrate it into organizations at the process level and culturally. Having the opportunity of starting KM from the beginning in multiple organizations forced him to find several methods to influence & educate leadership and associates; plus ways to show KM’s value. He describes two key success factors: 1) Focus on evolving KM governance and processes to establish a solid, but agile foundation that is continually aligned with the business strategy and culture (without a solid KM foundation the KM solutions and technologies will not be as effective or sustainable); and 2) Build KM platforms that focus on providing content that is easily available at the time of need, specific to an associate’s role and task, and integrated into the target process and/or application. Robert believes that we must focus on better enabling associate proficiency toward the achievement of organizational goals.

For the future, he looks forward to exploring the evolving capabilities from Performance Support, data analytics/big data, and cognitive computing.

Additional background: 1) High school and college mathematics instructor, Unisys, Grant Thornton, Hitachi Consulting, and currently director of KM at MetLife for 14 years. 2) Has presented at several KM World annual conferences and at APQC KM Conferences. In 2015, MetLife was one of five companies chosen for the APQC Connecting People to Content Best Practices Study and Report (link).

Learning with the system

Join KM Chicago on April 20, 2016!

Learning with the system: building blocks for successful knowledge management programs

Kate Elgayeva, Presenter

In today's era of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, organizations must be adaptable in the face of constant change (Harvard Business Review). Doing so requires that organizations engage in a continual process of learning and intra-organizational knowledge exchange and yet some critical ingredients of a recipe for effective knowledge management programs are often overlooked. How can knowledge management leaders in today's ever-changing organizations facilitate conditions for learning and optimize the organization's competitive advantage? This workshop will focus on identifying the essential building blocks of creating knowledge management programs that can optimize organizational change readiness, learning and innovation, and increase the organization's overall performance and effectiveness. Outcomes of this workshop for participants will include:

  • Understanding individual and organizational learning from a systems perspective;
  • Connecting systemic learning with knowledge management practices;
  • Identifying foundational components that contribute to successful knowledge management programs; and
  • Correlating the systems perspective with key organizational outcomes.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHY

Kate is currently an Adjunct Professor of Management at the University of Illinois in Chicago, teaching undergraduate and MBA courses in management and organizational behavior. She received her PhD in Organizational Leadership from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where she also teaches courses in the MA in Industrial and Organizational Psychology program. Kate's dissertation research focused on knowledge management processes, and examined the nature of tacit knowledge exchange as well as the formative role of the organizational leadership in knowledge management programs. Kate is currently a board member of the Academy of Management's Organization Development and Change division, a board member of ARMA Chicago, and has been a board member of KM Chicago since 2014.

KM Practices within Learning Organizations

In a learning organization, leaders are designers, stewards, and teachers.
They are responsible for building organizations where people continually expand their capabilities to understand complexity, clarify vision, and improve shared mental models –
that is, they are responsible for learning.

Knowledge management is an absolute requirement to improve outcomes and enable an organization to make better decisions faster. It fosters service expansion, and service personalization, yet often it is considered optional, and either skipped-over or done poorly. Knowledge management is more than just the creation of a knowledge base and the use of a KM tool—it’s a critical inline process for capturing and leveraging essential assets of an organization. This workshop will discuss the challenges of implementing knowledge management in a service oriented, and how you can successfully get others to support this initiative. You will also learn how BP, number six on the Fortune Global 500 list, exercises KM processes worldwide to generate competitive advantages, and yield enormous profits while improving outcomes and efficiencies.

 Key Takeaways:

  • Learn how to capture knowledge in the context of the customer
  • Learn about the principles of a Learning Organization
  • Learn about KM Practices in use at BP to create and retain knowledge

ZAGAT rated: "The more people in your party to share dishes, the better" at this "hip", "always crowded" River North Italian where "authentic", "way-above-average" "big and little bites" (including "wonderful house-cured meats"), "many wine options" by the carafe and "genuinely good" service "completely outweigh" the "astounding noise"; the "rustic" bi-level environs can get "tight", but prices are "so reasonable you can go back the next night" – and many do.

A KM Chicago Event - Dr. Arthur Shelley

An Evening with Arthur Shelley
July 2, 2015 from 5:00 - 7:00
at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP
300 South Wacker Drive, Suite 3100
Chicago, IL 60606

KNOWledge SUCCESSion, Building Strategic Capabilities Through Aligned Knowledge Flows

Based on his new book which explores topics on how to bring together aspects of effective knowledge leadership to enhance performance, Dr. Arthur Shelley will present KM Chicago with a lively dialog about Organizational Character, and include a fun game of exploration into how behavioral interactions impact knowledge flows and creativity.

KNOWledge SUCCESSion recognizes that we will willingly share our knowledge and insights with those we trust and respect. It is a process of interactive exchange that stimulates new ideas and becomes a self-perpetuating series of cycles in which people feel valued and are not afraid to “bounce” something untried. Ideas and concepts are nurtured to a point where they are robust enough to justify themselves, but not so much that the weaker ones survive in the longer term. The Darwinian evolution concept of adapt or die applies, and this ensures that the most robust innovations arise in the shortest possible time. Evolving WITH the environment is what makes KNOWledge SUCCESSion such a powerful concept. It facilitates an emergent pathway driven by enabling people to rapidly learn from their own mistakes, and the mistakes of others, providing a greater resilience to external forces.     (Shelley, GLOBE Magazine Ed1, iKMS 01/14, pp 27-30)
Background on the Author's viewpoint
An evening with Arthur Shelley video introduces you to the author and core concepts behind his understanding of organizational management. He does so by discussing his book The Organizational ZooA Survival Guide to Work Place Behavior, published in 2006. Shelley will examine how diverse behavior profiles are key to a successful organizations and individuals.

About Dr. Arthur Shelley
Dr Shelley is a capability development and knowledge strategy consultant with over 30 years professional experience. He has held a variety of corporate roles including managing international projects in Australia, Europe, Asia and USA and is an awarded tertiary educator. He facilitated courses on Knowledge Driven Performance and Project Leadership in RMIT University’s MBA and Master of Project Management programs and Knowledge Management through Open Universities Australia. Arthur is the author two books: Being a Successful Knowledge Leader and The Organizational Zoo, and has written book chapters, articles for academic and professional journals and has a regular blog providing insights from his research about metaphor and behavior.  His new book KNOWledge SUCCESSion will be released in mid-2015. Arthur is regularly invited to international conferences to speak or facilitate workshops on his books and articles or to share experiences as the former Global Knowledge Director for Cadbury Schweppes.
